Manchester City faced a frustrating night at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday, as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Brighton. Erling Haaland gave the home side the lead in the first half after converting a penalty, which marked his 150th goal for the club. However, City were unable to capitalize on several other chances, including a late opportunity for Rayan Cherki. Brighton grew into the game and eventually found an equalizer through Kaoru Mitoma on the hour mark. This result marked a third consecutive draw for Pep Guardiola’s team, leaving them stuck in a period of uncharacteristic dropped points.
Meanwhile, Aston Villa were also forced to settle for a single point after a goalless draw against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. Despite dominating possession for large stretches and creating several openings, Unai Emery’s side could not find a way past Dean Henderson. Ollie Watkins came the closest to a breakthrough when he struck the post late in the second half, but the match ended 0-0. The result leaves Villa level with Manchester City on 43 points, with both teams having now played 21 matches.
These midweek results have significantly shifted the momentum in the title race toward North London. Arsenal currently lead the table with 48 points and have a game in hand over their closest pursuers. Because both City and Villa failed to win, the gap at the top remains at five points heading into Thursday night.
The focus now shifts to the Emirates Stadium, where Arsenal host Liverpool. If the Gunners manage to win tonight, they will move to 51 points, establishing a commanding eight-point lead at the summit of the Premier League. Mikel Arteta’s side has a massive opportunity to take full control of the race for the trophy.
