The Nigeria Women’s Football League has handed down strict disciplinary measures against Ibom Angels FC following violent scenes that marred their Premiership match against Bayelsa Queens in Uyo.
The decision, made public on Thursday, 8 January 2026, came after the league’s disciplinary body studied the referees’ reports and reviewed video footage from the match played on Wednesday, 7 January 2026, at the Uyo Township Stadium.
Investigations revealed that home supporters invaded the pitch and physically confronted Bayelsa Queens players and officials, an incident the NWFL described as a grave breach of its rules and the spirit of sportsmanship.
Consequently, Ibom Angels have been fined a combined ₦2.5 million for various infractions. The breakdown includes ₦1.5 million for violations connected to assault, threats, and abusive behaviour under Article 26.1, as well as ₦1 million for conduct deemed damaging to the image of the league and inadequate security arrangements.
In addition to the financial penalty, the club has been directed to play its next three home fixtures without spectators, in accordance with Article 16.4 of the NWFL regulations.
Reacting to the sanctions, NWFL Chief Operating Officer, Modupe Shabi, emphasized that the league would not compromise on safety standards.
“The protection of players, officials and all match stakeholders is paramount,” Shabi stated. “The incident in Uyo is unacceptable and runs contrary to everything the NWFL stands for. Clubs must take responsibility for their supporters, and we will not hesitate to impose even tougher penalties where necessary.”
Ibom Angels will host Ekiti Queens, Edo Queens and Naija Ratels behind closed doors in matches scheduled for January and February.
The NWFL also cautioned that any breach of the imposed directives or a recurrence of crowd violence could lead to harsher consequences, including longer stadium bans and further disciplinary action.
