Tempers flared at the end of Nigeria’s 2-0 victory over Algeria in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, as members of the Algerian team and officials angrily confronted match referee Isaa Sy.
The situation escalated immediately after the final whistle, with several Algerian players surrounding the official on the pitch to protest his decisions during the encounter. Security personnel were forced to intervene, eventually escorting Sy off the field and into the dressing room amid concerns for his safety, following disturbances involving some supporters and stadium security.
Reports indicate that the confrontation did not end on the pitch. The referee was reportedly subjected to further harassment in the tunnel as officials from the Desert Foxes continued to vent their frustration over what they believed were controversial calls that went against them during the match.
Algeria’s camp is said to be particularly unhappy with key moments in the game, which they feel influenced the outcome of the contest. Despite the protests, the result stood, confirming Nigeria’s place in the last four of the tournament.
Second-half goals from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams sealed the win for the Super Eagles, who will now face tournament hosts Morocco in a highly anticipated semi-final showdown.
