The host nation Morocco advanced to the semifinals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with a commanding 2-0 victory over Cameroon in their quarterfinal clash on Friday at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
Brahim Díaz opened the scoring in the 26th minute, netting his fifth goal in as many games at the tournament. The Real Madrid forward got on the end of a header from Ayoub El Kaabi following a corner kick, deflecting the ball into the net from close range. This remarkable scoring streak marks a historic feat for Díaz, becoming the first Moroccan player to score in five consecutive matches at a single AFCON finals.
Morocco maintained control throughout the match, dominating possession and creating pressure through set pieces, while keeping a solid defensive shape that has seen them concede no goals from open play in the tournament so far.
The decisive second goal arrived in the 74th minute, courtesy of Ismael Saibari. The PSV Eindhoven midfielder, left unmarked at the back post, controlled a delivery from a set piece (a free kick or corner) before firing a powerful low shot into the far corner, sealing the win and sending the home crowd into raptures.
Cameroon, the five-time African champions, struggled to create clear chances and rarely tested Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou. A notable moment came in the second half when Bryan Mbeumo went down in the box after a challenge, prompting strong appeals for a penalty. However, the Mauritanian referee Dahane Beida waved play on following the incident, amid divided opinions and no intervention from VAR.
The Atlas Lions, chasing their first AFCON title since 1976 and aiming to end a 50-year wait for continental glory on home soil, now progress to the semifinals. They will face the winner of the quarterfinal between Nigeria and Algeria, scheduled for Saturday, in a clash set for Rabat on Wednesday.
This victory marks Morocco’s first appearance in the AFCON semifinals since 2004, underlining their growing stature as one of Africa’s top sides following their impressive 2022 World Cup run.
Coach Walid Regragui’s team delivered a disciplined and efficient performance, showcasing maturity and control in a high-stakes encounter. With the passionate home support behind them, Morocco remain firmly in contention for the trophy.
