Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle says he is confident in his squad ahead of Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations semi-final against hosts Morocco, even though captain Wilfred Ndidi will miss the match through suspension.
Chelle spoke to reporters on Tuesday in Rabat, where he described the mood in camp as calm and focused ahead of Wednesday’s crucial encounter.
The Nigerian coach reflected on his long connection with the national team, saying the moment carries personal meaning.
“I have followed the Super Eagles since the 1998 World Cup in France,” Chelle said. “I used to buy the jersey and travel to watch their matches. Today, I am proud to be here as the coach.”
He also singled out Alex Iwobi for praise, highlighting the midfielder’s intelligence and influence within the squad.
“Alex is a very intelligent footballer,” Chelle said. “He understands the game deeply. I’m proud of him. His YouTube work sometimes distracts him, but it also helps him and his teammates relax.”
Chelle confirmed that Ndidi will sit out the semi-final after picking up too many yellow cards, admitting the midfielder’s absence will be felt.
“It is disappointing because Ndidi gives a lot to this team,” he said. “But this is also an opportunity to see what the other players can offer.”
Despite losing his captain, Chelle insisted he has faith in the depth of his squad and will make final decisions after the last training session.
“I believe in my players,” he said. “After training, I will decide. I also need to be sure everyone is physically ready.”
The coach added that the team has been practising penalty kicks in case the match goes the distance.
“We are working on penalties,” Chelle said. “If it comes to that, I will pray hard and trust my players.”
Nigeria take on Morocco on Wednesday for a place in the AFCON 2025 final, as the Super Eagles continue their push for a fourth continental crown.
