Hosts Morocco are through to the Africa Cup of Nations final after overcoming Nigeria 4โ2 on penalties, following a gripping semi-final that ended goalless after extra time in Rabat.
Both sides approached the game with caution, producing a tactical battle dominated by organisation and discipline rather than open attacking play. Despite 120 minutes of action, neither team could break the deadlock, with Stanley Nwabali and Yassine Bounou standing tall in goal and making important interventions.
Morocco controlled much of the first half, circulating the ball with intent but lacking a decisive touch in the final third. Brahim Dรญaz and Adam Masina had sights of goal, while Achraf Hakimi came close with a set piece that brushed the top of the net.
Nigeria looked most dangerous on the break. Ademola Lookman forced Bounou into a stop before half-time, yet clear chances remained rare as รric Chelleโs men were largely kept at armโs length.
The pattern barely changed after the restart. Midfield battles replaced attacking rhythm, though Raphael Onyedika and Abde Ezzalzouli each tested the goalkeepers as nerves began to creep in.
Extra time offered more tension than quality. Nayef Aguerd rattled the woodwork for Morocco, but Nigeria, so solid throughout the tournament, found little space to work with in attack.
Penalties were needed to separate the teams. Hamza Igamaneโs early miss, saved by Nwabali, briefly swung momentum Nigeriaโs way, but Samuel Chukwueze failed to capitalise. Hakimi kept Morocco on course, and when Bruno Onyemaechi fired wide, the door was opened for Youssef En-Nesyri to drive home the winning kick.
Morocco will now meet holders Senegal in Sundayโs final, with the Atlas Lions one match away from lifting the trophy for the first time since 1976.
