The Nigeria Premier Football League has strongly criticised the outbreak of crowd trouble that followed the matchday 20 encounter between Remo Stars and Ikorodu City in Ikenne.
Remo Stars claimed a slim 1–0 victory in the local derby, but the game was overshadowed by reports of supporters being attacked after the final whistle.
Reacting to the incident, NPFL Chief Operating Officer, Davidson Owumi, said the league was deeply dissatisfied with what transpired, stressing that violence has no place in Nigerian football.
It was gathered that the league organisers had earlier held discussions with officials of both clubs ahead of the fixture in a bid to resolve existing tensions.
Following the disturbing reports and video clips in circulation, the NPFL has directed Remo Stars and Ikorodu City to appear before an investigative panel on Monday, January 19, in Abuja.
In a statement, the league confirmed that the session would examine both the immediate and underlying causes of the unrest, adding that appropriate disciplinary measures would be taken against any individual or club found responsible.
The NPFL reiterated its commitment to ensuring safety at match venues and maintaining the integrity of the domestic league.
