Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has urged the Confederation of African Football, CAF, to take action over the controversial conduct of ball boys during Morocco’s matches at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Ferdinand’s comments follow widely circulated footage from the AFCON final in which ball boys were seen removing towels belonging to Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, apparently preventing him from drying his hands during key moments of the game.
A similar incident had earlier occurred in Nigeria’s semi-final clash against Morocco, where ball boys were also caught taking away the towels of Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, sparking criticism from fans and analysts alike.
Reacting to the incidents, Ferdinand described the behaviour as unacceptable and called for accountability from the Moroccan Football Association.
Speaking on the *Rio Presents Podcast*, the former England defender said the actions crossed a line.
“The worst thing I saw during the AFCON was the ball boys trying to take the goalkeeper’s towels to stop him from drying his hands. That was insane,” Ferdinand said.
He added that CAF must step in to prevent a repeat of such incidents in future tournaments.
“Someone has to get a hold of the Moroccan FA at some point. We need explanations,” he continued. “What right do they have to stop goalkeepers from drying their hands? That’s part of the game.”
The towel incidents have since fuelled debate about matchday conduct and fair play at the tournament, with many calling on CAF to strengthen oversight and ensure neutral and professional behaviour from match officials and support staff.
