Former Chelsea captain John Terry has taken a swipe at Arsenal following their 3-2 defeat to Manchester United in Sunday’s Premier League clash at the Emirates Stadium.
The loss proved costly for the Gunners in more ways than one, as the three goals conceded ensured they could no longer match Chelsea’s long-standing defensive record from the 2004/2005 Premier League season.
Arsenal’s tally has now risen to 17 goals conceded in the league, surpassing the famous Chelsea side that let in just 15 goals during Jose Mourinho’s first spell at Stamford Bridge, a record that has stood for 21 years.
Reacting to the development shortly after the final whistle, Terry took to Instagram to mock Arsenal, suggesting Chelsea’s historic achievement remains intact.
“The record is safe for another year,” the former England defender wrote.
Terry was a central figure in the Chelsea backline that set the benchmark, playing alongside Petr Cech in goal and a formidable defensive unit marshalled under Mourinho’s management.
The 44-year-old also name-checked some of his former defensive teammates as he celebrated the record’s survival.
“So Petr Cech, Paolo Maldini, Ricardo Carvalho, William Gallas, it’s time to celebrate with a bottle or a glass of red wine,” Terry added.
Chelsea’s 2004/2005 defensive record remains one of the most remarkable feats in Premier League history, and Arsenal’s defeat ensured it will continue to stand for at least another season.
