Czech giants Viktoria Plzeň have confirmed the capture of Nigerian attacker Salim Fago Lawal from Croatian side NK Istra, in a deal believed to be the biggest sale in the Croatian club’s history.
The 23-year-old completes the switch after days of talks between both clubs. The transfer fee is reported to be around €2.4 million, with bonuses that could take the total package close to €3 million.
A former Nigeria U-20 international, Lawal is expected to bolster Plzeň’s attacking options following the exit of compatriot Rafiu Durosinmi, who recently joined Italian club Pisa.
Lawal impressed during his spell in Croatia, scoring 15 goals and registering two assists. His performances reportedly drew attention from several clubs across Europe before Plzeň won the race for his signature.
Plzeň sporting director Martin Vozábal revealed the club had been monitoring the striker for some time.
“After Rafiu left, we wanted to strengthen our attacking department and increase competition,” Vozábal said. “Salim fits what we were looking for. We followed him closely in the Croatian league. He is quick, flexible, and can operate through the middle or from wide areas. We’re pleased everything is completed and he can be available from the start of the league.”
Lawal has penned a three-and-a-half-year contract and will don the number 70 shirt.
The Nigerian forward said Plzeň’s reputation in Europe influenced his decision.
“I’ve known Viktoria mainly from their performances in European competitions over the years,” he said. “They’ve achieved a lot, and that made this move very attractive. I believe it’s the right step in my career, and I want to contribute as much as I can.”
Lawal was part of Nigeria’s Super Eagles squad at the latest Africa Cup of Nations, featuring in a friendly against Egypt and in a tournament match against Uganda.
“Being with the national team has helped my preparation,” he added. “I feel ready and I want to be fully available to the coaches straight away.”
