Arsenal moved further clear at the top of the Premier League on Saturday night, building a nine point cushion after a convincing 3–0 win over Sunderland.
The North London side went into the match aware that the weekend could work heavily in their favour, with closest challengers Liverpool and Manchester City set to clash at Anfield on Sunday.
Sunderland kept Arsenal quiet for much of the opening half, defending deep and frustrating Mikel Arteta’s team. The breakthrough eventually arrived when Martin Zubimendi struck powerfully from outside the area to put the hosts ahead.
The game opened up after the interval and substitute Viktor Gyokeres made the difference, scoring twice to seal a comfortable victory for the league leaders.
Arsenal’s advantage was further boosted by Aston Villa’s 1–1 draw away at Bournemouth, leaving the teams in second and third place nine points behind the Gunners.
Manchester City have the chance to reduce the gap to six points if they manage to defeat Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.
