Cameroon put on a ruthless display in the first-leg fixtures of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup African qualifiers on Sunday, emerging as the biggest winners of the opening round.
The Central Africans were in devastating form as they crushed Botswana 5–0, all but sealing passage to the next round ahead of the return leg. The emphatic victory underlined Cameroon’s attacking quality and depth, leaving Botswana with a mountain to climb in the reverse fixture.
Elsewhere, Nigeria claimed a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Senegal, giving the Falconets a slight but crucial edge going into the second leg. The encounter was keenly contested, with both sides showing defensive discipline, but Nigeria managed to do just enough to secure the win.
Kenya also enjoyed a positive outing, edging Tanzania by the same 1–0 margin. The narrow result keeps the tie delicately poised, though Kenya will take confidence from heading into the return fixture with a lead.
Two other matches ended without a winner, further highlighting the competitiveness of the qualifiers. Uganda were held to a draw by Zambia, while Guinea-Bissau and Malawi also played out a stalemate, leaving both ties evenly balanced ahead of the decisive second legs.
Galaxysports reports that the return-leg fixtures are scheduled to begin from 13 February, with qualification places for the World Cup finals still firmly up for grabs as teams battle for continental supremacy.
