Technical adviser of Rivers United, Finidi George, has conceded that his team was beaten by a better side following their comprehensive 3–0 loss to Moroccan giants RS Berkane in their final group stage outing of the CAF Champions League.
The Pride of Rivers endured a frustrating continental campaign, finishing with just one point from six matches in a tough group that exposed the gap between Nigeria’s representatives and some of Africa’s more experienced sides. Despite their determination, Rivers United struggled for consistency and failed to translate their domestic form onto the continental stage.
Speaking after the heavy defeat, Finidi was candid in his assessment of the encounter, admitting that RS Berkane controlled proceedings from start to finish.
“RS Berkane were the better team. They dominated the game and created most of the clear cut chances,” Finidi said during his post match interview. “We tried to improve in the second half and match their intensity, but it was not enough.”
The former Super Eagles winger acknowledged that the Moroccan side’s tactical discipline, composure on the ball, and clinical finishing made the difference on the night. He also pointed out that competing regularly at this level requires depth, experience, and mental strength, areas his team will look to improve going forward.
Rivers United’s solitary point in the group came amid a string of difficult fixtures, as they struggled defensively and found it hard to convert scoring opportunities. The 3–0 defeat to Berkane ultimately underlined the gulf in experience between both clubs in continental competitions.
Nevertheless, Finidi remains optimistic about the future. He described the campaign as a valuable learning curve and assured supporters that the team would return stronger if given another opportunity to compete in Africa’s elite club competition.
“We wanted to do better in this tournament, but it wasn’t possible this time,” he added. “If we qualify again next season, we will come back stronger. This experience will help us grow. It is part of the learning process.”
With their continental journey now over, Rivers United will shift their focus back to domestic competitions, where they hope to rebuild confidence, strengthen their squad, and secure another shot at the CAF Champions League next season.
