Oliseh urges Osimhen, Lookman to lead Super Eagles to trophies
Former Super Eagles head coach, Sunday Oliseh, has challenged Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman to step up and lead Nigeria to major titles in the coming years.
Oliseh made the remark while reacting to the impressive performances of the two forwards in the UEFA Champions League this season.
Osimhen has been in strong form for Turkish giants Galatasaray, while Lookman has continued to establish himself as a key player for Spanish side Atlético Madrid.
The former Nigerian international praised the duo as exceptional talents currently flying the country’s flag at the highest level of European football.
Speaking during a recent episode of his Global Football Insights Podcast, Oliseh said Nigeria is fortunate to have two players performing so well on the biggest stage in club football.
“We have two top Nigerian players currently excelling in the Champions League,” Oliseh said.
“Osimhen is doing well, and Lookman is also doing exceptionally well.
“All we need now is for these two top players to lead the team and for the others to follow, and you will have it.”
According to Oliseh, the presence of players performing consistently in elite competitions should give the Nigeria national football team confidence as they look to compete strongly in international tournaments.
He stressed that while individual brilliance is important, collective effort and leadership from top players will be key to Nigeria’s ambition of returning to the summit of African football.
Osimhen and Lookman were both instrumental for the Super Eagles during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where the team finished in third place.
The duo played key roles throughout the competition as Nigeria secured the bronze medal after a strong campaign.
With both players continuing to deliver impressive performances for their clubs in Europe, Oliseh believes they now have the responsibility of inspiring the rest of the squad and helping the Super Eagles compete for major honours again in the near future.
