Pep Guardiola, manager of Manchester City, has been handed a two-match touchline ban after receiving a yellow card during Saturday’s FA Cup clash against Newcastle United.
The caution means Guardiola has now accumulated six bookings this season, triggering an automatic suspension.
The incident occurred after the Spaniard confronted the fourth official, Lewis Smith, following a foul by Kieran Trippier on City winger Jeremy Doku.
Guardiola also appeared to respond with sarcastic applause after Omar Marmoush scored to put Newcastle 3–1 ahead at St James’ Park.
As a result of the suspension, Guardiola will be absent from the dugout when City face West Ham United in the Premier League next weekend. He will also miss their FA Cup quarter-final match scheduled for April.
However, the ban will not affect European or cup final matches. Guardiola will therefore be permitted on the bench when City take on Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League and during the EFL Cup Final against Arsenal on March 22.
