Nigeria internationals Victor Osimhen and Paul Onuachu delivered standout performances in the Turkish league on Saturday, guiding their respective teams Galatasaray and Trabzonspor to important victories while setting new milestones.
Osimhen was on target as Galatasaray secured a comfortable 3–0 win against Istanbul Başakşehir in their Round 26 clash in the Süper Lig.
The Nigerian forward scored Galatasaray’s second goal of the evening, taking his league tally to 12 for the season. His moment came in the 66th minute when he met a precise delivery from Yunus Akgün inside the penalty area. With a controlled first touch, Osimhen calmly directed the ball into the top corner.
Earlier, Galatasaray had taken the lead in the 57th minute when Wilfried Singo finished from a free-kick situation involving Noa Lang.
Osimhen’s goal further highlighted his impressive run of form. The striker has now recorded either a goal or an assist in nine straight league games. During that period, he has scored nine times and contributed four assists.
Statistics platform Opta noted that this sequence is the longest run of goal involvement by a Galatasaray player since detailed records began in the 2014–2015 campaign.
The hosts completed the scoring in the 84th minute when substitute Renato Nhaga finished off another well-worked move set up by Yunus Akgün.
Meanwhile, fellow Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu was the difference-maker as Trabzonspor edged Çaykur Rizespor 1–0 in another Süper Lig fixture.
Onuachu struck early in the second half, scoring six minutes after the restart with a close-range finish following a smart cut-back from Oleksandr Zubkov.
The goal lifted the Nigerian’s season numbers to 23 goals and two assists in 26 appearances across all competitions, underlining his importance to the Trabzon-based side.
The 31-year-old has now scored in eight consecutive league matches, a run that includes goals against Kasımpaşa S.K., Antalyaspor, Samsunspor, Fenerbahçe S.K., Gaziantep F.K., Fatih Karagümrük S.K. and Kayserispor.
With that achievement, Onuachu becomes the first Trabzonspor player since Burak Yılmaz in 2011 to score in at least eight successive league games.
He is also closing in on another historic mark at the club. The current record for most league goals in a single Süper Lig season by a foreign Trabzonspor player belongs to Shota Arveladze, who netted 25 times during the 1995–96 campaign.
