Trabzonspor defender Chibuike Nwaiwu has been drafted into the Super Eagles squad as a replacement for the injured Calvin Bassey ahead of Nigeria’s upcoming international friendlies against Iran and Jordan.
Bassey’s withdrawal comes as a result of a back problem he sustained during Fulham vs Burnley match March 2026, where Fulham recorded a 3-1 victory over Burnley at Craven Cottage. The defender was unable to recover in time, prompting the technical crew to seek an alternative option in defense.
His absence has opened the door for Nwaiwu, who now gets a golden opportunity to stake his claim at the international level. The invitation marks a major breakthrough in the 22-year-old’s career, as he receives his maiden call-up to represent Nigeria at senior level.
Nwaiwu only recently completed a move to Trabzonspor from Wolfsberger AC in the January transfer window, and he has already begun to make his presence felt in the Turkish top flight. Known for his physicality, composure on the ball, and aerial strength, the young centre-back has quickly adapted to life in a new league.
Before his switch to Europe, Nwaiwu built his reputation with Enyimba, where he emerged as one of the most promising defenders in the domestic scene. His performances earned him attention from scouts abroad, leading to his move to Austria and subsequently to Turkey.
Since joining Trabzonspor, the defender has featured in 10 league matches, contributing two goals and one assist—an impressive return for a central defender. His attacking contributions, combined with his defensive solidity, have made him one of the standout young Nigerians currently playing in Europe.
For the Super Eagles, the upcoming friendlies will serve as an important opportunity to test squad depth and assess new talents. Nwaiwu’s inclusion suggests a deliberate effort by the coaching staff to expand options in defense and integrate emerging players into the national setup.
As Nigeria prepares to face Iran and Jordan, all eyes will be on the debutant to see if he can translate his club form onto the international stage. A strong showing could not only cement his place in future squads but also provide healthy competition within the team’s defensive ranks.
