England head coach Thomas Tuchel has shed more light on the decision to allow Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice to withdraw from the national team camp ahead of their international friendly against Japan, describing the move as a necessary precaution.
The Arsenal duo were both initially part of the squad but were later released to return to their club side for further medical evaluation after concerns over their fitness levels surfaced during training.
Addressing the situation for the first time, Tuchel stated that although both players were eager and willing to feature for England, keeping them in camp did not align with the medical advice and overall risk assessment carried out by the teamโs staff.
The German manager emphasized that the decision was not taken lightly, noting that Saka and Rice remain key figures for both club and country. However, he explained that their physical condition made it clear that pushing them to play could have led to more serious complications.
Tuchel pointed out that both players showed visible signs of discomfort, raising concerns among the medical team about the possibility of aggravating their conditions if they were involved in the match.
He added that in such situations, protecting the long term fitness of players must always take priority over short term gains, especially in a non competitive fixture like a friendly.
According to him, risking further injury to two important players would have been an unnecessary gamble, particularly at a stage of the season where workload management is crucial.
Tuchel also underlined the importance of maintaining strong communication between the national team and club sides, explaining that allowing the players to return to Arsenal ensures they receive the best possible care and recovery plan.
The England boss concluded that while their absence is a setback for the team, the decision ultimately serves the best interest of everyone involved, ensuring that Saka and Rice can recover fully and return to action without long term consequences.
