The Confederation of African Football has appointed Nigerian football administrator Samson Adamu as Acting Secretary General, marking a significant milestone for Nigeria within continental football governance.
The appointment, confirmed on Sunday, makes Adamu the first Nigerian to occupy the role since the organisation was established more than seventy years ago.
His emergence follows the resignation of Veron Mosengo-Omba, who stepped down from the position on the same day, paving the way for a leadership transition at the Cairo-based body.
According to details from the Nigeria Football Federation, Adamuโs nomination was proposed by CAFโs Executive Committee and later ratified by the Congress during its meeting in Cairo.
Before his appointment, Adamu served as CAFโs Director of Tournaments and Events, where he played a key role in coordinating major competitions across the continent. His work contributed to the improved organisation of flagship tournaments such as the Africa Cup of Nations and several inter-club competitions.
His elevation is widely viewed as recognition of his experience and deep understanding of CAFโs administrative structure.
For Nigeria, the development represents a boost in influence at the highest level of football administration in Africa. While the country has produced several notable players and officials, representation at the top tier of CAFโs leadership has remained limited.
Adamuโs appointment is therefore seen as a step towards greater Nigerian involvement in continental football decision-making.
He assumes office at a time when CAF continues to implement reforms aimed at improving governance, transparency, and competition structures.
With his familiarity with the organisationโs systems, attention will now be on how he manages the responsibilities of the role and sustains ongoing reforms within CAF.
Meanwhile, the Office of the Executive Chairman of XT Galaxy Sports Development China, Mr Austin Akpehe, has extended warm congratulations to Samson Adamu on his appointment.
In a formal statement issued on behalf of the board, management, and entire team, Mr Akpehe described the development as a well-deserved recognition of Adamuโs professionalism, experience, and long-standing contributions to football administration across the continent.
He noted that Adamuโs proven track record, particularly in overseeing tournaments and events within CAF, positions him strongly to provide effective leadership and ensure continuity within the organisation.
The statement further reiterated that the appointment represents a major milestone for Nigeria, reflecting the growing influence of Nigerian professionals within continental and global football governance.
XT Galaxy Sports Development China also expressed confidence that Adamu will bring strategic direction, institutional stability, and a forward-looking approach to CAFโs administrative structure.
The organisation wished him success in his new role, expressing optimism that his tenure would contribute to the continued growth, unity, and professionalism of football across Africa.
