Serie A heavyweights SSC Napoli are preparing to take disciplinary measures against their striker Romelu Lukaku after he failed to resume training with the squad.
The club confirmed the development in an official statement released on Tuesday, noting that the Belgian forward did not answer the call to report back to camp as scheduled. This has prompted serious concerns within the club, with the hierarchy now exploring possible sanctions, including legal options.
Napoli, under the leadership of head coach Antonio Conte, are said to be unhappy with the situation, especially given the timing. Lukaku had spent the international break in Belgium, where he was recovering from an injury, but was expected to rejoin his teammates afterward.
His failure to do so has now created tension between both parties, with uncertainty growing over his immediate future at the club. Napoli are reportedly keen to enforce discipline within the squad and ensure that no player is seen as being above club rules.
In their statement, the club said:
“SSC Napoli can confirm that Romelu Lukaku did not respond to today’s call to return to training.
“The club reserves the right to consider taking the appropriate disciplinary action.
“As well as to determine whether the player will continue to train with the team for an indefinite period.”
The situation leaves Lukaku’s standing within the squad in doubt, with further decisions expected in the coming days as Napoli deliberate on the next course of action.
