Roberto Martinez, head coach of Portugal, has reassured fans that captain Cristiano Ronaldo is on track to recover fully ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Ronaldo was notably absent from Portugal’s squad for their March fixtures against the United States and Mexico. The veteran forward picked up an injury in February while playing for Al-Nassr during a 3–1 victory over Al-Fayha in the Saudi Pro League.
Speaking to reporters after Portugal’s win over the United States on Tuesday, Martinez offered a positive update on Ronaldo’s condition. He explained that the injury is not severe and is similar to those currently being managed by teammates Ruben Dias and Nelson Semedo.
According to Martinez, Ronaldo is progressing well in his recovery and there is no major concern regarding his availability for the World Cup. He emphasized that the situation will continue to be monitored over the coming weeks, with enough time available to assess every player’s fitness ahead of the tournament.
The coach also made it clear that Ronaldo will be treated like every other member of the squad, with selection decisions based on form and fitness. However, he dismissed any serious doubts about the forward’s chances of featuring on football’s biggest stage this summer.
With preparations underway for the global tournament, Portugal will be hoping to have their experienced captain fully fit, as they aim to make a strong impression at the World Cup.
