FC Barcelona are reportedly shifting their transfer focus to Victor Osimhen after encountering major obstacles in their pursuit of Julián Álvarez from Atlético Madrid.
The Catalan giants had initially identified Álvarez as their primary attacking target ahead of the summer transfer window, as they plan for a long-term replacement for veteran striker Robert Lewandowski. However, Atlético Madrid’s firm stance on retaining the Argentine forward has significantly complicated negotiations.
Reports indicate that Atlético value Álvarez at around €200 million, a figure that would place any potential deal among the most expensive transfers in football history, second only to Neymar’s €222 million move to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017.
Having signed Álvarez for €95 million in 2024, Atlético are reportedly unwilling to entertain offers below €100 million, reflecting both the player’s importance to the squad and the club’s improved financial position. This has created a significant gap between valuation and what Barcelona are realistically able to offer.
Barcelona, currently managing financial constraints, are said to be considering a player-plus-cash proposal in an attempt to reduce the upfront cost of any deal. However, such an arrangement is unlikely to appeal to Atlético, who are under no pressure to sell and are expected to reject structured offers that fall below their valuation.
With negotiations for Álvarez proving increasingly difficult, Barcelona have now intensified their interest in Osimhen, who is viewed as a more attainable option. The Nigerian striker is valued at approximately €75 million, a figure that aligns more closely with Barcelona’s financial capabilities.
Osimhen, currently with Galatasaray, has continued to impress with his goal-scoring form and physical presence, making him an attractive alternative as Barcelona seek to reinforce their attacking line.
While it remains uncertain whether Galatasaray would be willing to part with their key forward at that valuation, Osimhen’s profile and relatively lower cost compared to Álvarez make him a more realistic target under current circumstances.
Atlético Madrid’s improved financial stability further reduces the likelihood of a forced sale, meaning Barcelona would need to significantly increase their offer to have any chance of securing Álvarez’s signature.
As the summer transfer window approaches, Barcelona now face a critical decision—either stretch their financial limits for a marquee signing or pivot decisively toward more feasible options like Osimhen, who could offer both quality and value as they plan for the future.
