World football governing body FIFA has officially approved the change of international allegiance for goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo, confirming his switch from England to Nigeria.
The approval, which was documented on FIFA’s Change of Association platform on April 6, 2026, makes the 24-year-old eligible to represent the Super Eagles at senior international level.
Checks on FIFA’s official records show that Okonkwo’s national association has now been updated to the Nigeria Football Federation, replacing his previous affiliation with The Football Association.
Born in Camden, London, to Nigerian parents of Igbo descent, Okonkwo began his football journey at a young age, joining the academy of Arsenal at just eight years old, where he developed through the ranks.
At international level, he previously represented England across several youth categories between 2015 and 2019, featuring for the U-15, U-16, U-17 and U-18 teams. However, he never made a senior appearance for the Three Lions, making him eligible to switch allegiance under FIFA regulations.
Okonkwo is currently the first-choice goalkeeper for Wrexham in the EFL Championship, following a permanent move from Arsenal. Standing at nearly two metres tall, the shot-stopper has been one of the standout performers for the club this season, delivering consistent displays and crucial saves.
His impressive form has not gone unnoticed, with many observers tipping him as a strong addition to Nigeria’s goalkeeping department.
The move comes after reported discussions with Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle during the Unity Cup in London last year, although administrative processes prevented him from being included in Nigeria’s squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
With the switch now confirmed, Okonkwo strengthens Nigeria’s options in goal, joining an existing pool that includes Stanley Nwabali and Maduka Okoye.
His arrival is expected to increase competition within the squad, while also providing the national team with greater depth and quality as preparations continue for upcoming international fixtures.
