Manchester United legend Roy Keane has launched a stinging criticism of Trent Alexander-Arnold following Real Madrid’s 2-1 defeat to Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Keane did not hold back in his assessment, describing the England international’s defensive lapse as a “childish mistake” and questioning his consistency in high-pressure matches. Despite contributing an assist for Kylian Mbappé, Alexander-Arnold’s overall defensive performance came under heavy scrutiny after Bayern exposed Madrid at key moments.
The decisive incident came when Luis Díaz was allowed to drift in behind the defender to score Bayern’s opening goal, with Keane insisting it was a basic defensive error that should not happen at elite level. Harry Kane later added a second for the Bundesliga side, compounding Real Madrid’s problems despite their attacking response.
Keane, speaking on Stick to Football, said he had grown frustrated with repeated issues in Alexander-Arnold’s defensive game, particularly in major European fixtures where concentration and positioning are critical.
“Listen, I’m fed up. The same story in every important match. People keep talking about how well the ball is passed, but what about the basics? Defending,” Keane said.
“At this level, in the Champions League, you can’t just switch off like that. It’s a childish mistake. Letting Luis Díaz get past you like you’re not even there? Please.”
The former midfielder further stressed that while modern full-backs are often praised for their creativity and passing ability, defensive reliability remains non-negotiable in elite competitions like the Champions League. He suggested that moments like these continue to raise questions about Alexander-Arnold’s defensive discipline on the biggest stage.
Real Madrid will now head into the second leg needing a strong response to overturn the deficit, while scrutiny continues to build around their defensive structure after a difficult night against Bayern Munich.
