The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has handed Warri Wolves a significant disciplinary punishment following disturbing incidents that occurred during their clash with Plateau United in Ozoro. The league announced a ₦6 million fine against the club and further directed that all their remaining home games this season must be played behind closed doors.
The decision comes after an investigation into reports of crowd trouble and security lapses during the fixture, which was marred by unruly behaviour from sections of the home supporters. According to the NPFL, the club failed in its responsibility to provide adequate security arrangements for the match, a lapse that reportedly allowed unauthorized individuals to gain access to restricted areas of the stadium.
The situation escalated during the encounter when some fans engaged in conduct described as unsporting and capable of damaging the image and integrity of the league. These actions not only disrupted the flow of the match but also created a tense atmosphere around the stadium. In addition, there were serious allegations of misconduct directed at match officials, which contributed to a stoppage that lasted approximately 10 minutes.
In its disciplinary ruling, the NPFL emphasized that clubs are accountable for the behaviour of their supporters and the overall security of match venues. It stated that Warri Wolves’ failure to maintain proper control over access points and crowd behaviour constituted a breach of league regulations.
Beyond the financial penalty and stadium ban, the league also issued further directives to the club. Warri Wolves have been instructed to identify individuals responsible for the disorderly conduct during the match. The NPFL expects the club to ensure that those found culpable are apprehended and subjected to legal prosecution where necessary. Furthermore, the club must provide documented evidence showing the steps taken to comply with these instructions.
The governing body of the league stressed that these measures are intended not only as punishment but also as a deterrent to other clubs, reinforcing the importance of safety, discipline, and respect for match officials in Nigerian football.
Warri Wolves have also been granted a 48-hour window from the time they received the notice to formally appeal the sanctions if they believe there are grounds to challenge the decision.
The development adds to ongoing discussions about crowd control and security standards in the NPFL, as the league continues to push for improved professionalism and a safer matchday environment across all venues.
