Former Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has finally reacted to the growing tension between Kylian Mbappe and current Los Blancos head coach Alvaro Arbeloa following reports of a heated disagreement inside the club.
The controversy erupted after Mbappe openly questioned Arbeloa’s decision to leave him out of Real Madrid’s crucial title-deciding clash against Barcelona, a move that reportedly shocked many fans and football pundits across Europe.
The French superstar also fueled further drama by claiming he had been pushed down to become Real Madrid’s fourth-choice striker, sparking intense debate about his relationship with the coaching staff at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Arbeloa quickly responded to the comments, insisting Mbappe had completely misunderstood the situation while denying claims that the World Cup winner had been deliberately sidelined.
Reacting to the ongoing feud, Mourinho admitted the situation was painful to watch because of his close relationship with Arbeloa, whom he coached during his time at Real Madrid.
The Portuguese tactician described Arbeloa as one of his most loyal former players and revealed he still maintains a strong bond with him despite both men now working as managers.
“It hurts because Arbeloa is someone very special to me,” Mourinho said while speaking about the controversy.
“He was one of the players who always gave everything for me on the pitch, and now seeing him as Real Madrid coach makes me proud. Our connection remains very strong.”
Mourinho also used the opportunity to highlight the enormous pressure managers face at top clubs, joking that many former players only truly understand the difficulties of coaching after stepping into the role themselves.
“I always tell my former players who become coaches to wait a few years and then count how many grey hairs they have,” Mourinho added.
“That is when they realise coaching is far more difficult than playing football. Still, I’m very happy with what Arbeloa has achieved so far.”
The Mbappe-Arbeloa saga has continued to dominate headlines in Spain, with many supporters now wondering whether the relationship between the French forward and his manager can be repaired before next season.
Despite the growing speculation, both Mbappe and Arbeloa remain key figures at Real Madrid as the club prepares for another major campaign filled with huge expectations.
