Maduka Okoye has been named Udinese’s Player of the Season after an impressive 2025/26 campaign in Italy’s Serie A, marking a strong comeback year for the Nigerian goalkeeper.
The Super Eagles shot-stopper, who plays for Udinese Calcio, earned the recognition for his consistent performances throughout the season, where he established himself as a key figure in the team despite an initially difficult start to the campaign.
Okoye’s season began on a challenging note after he was sidelined for the opening months due to a suspension linked to an alleged involvement in a match-fixing investigation. The setback temporarily disrupted his momentum and raised uncertainty about his place in the squad upon his return. However, he responded strongly once given the opportunity to play again, quickly reclaiming his position as Udinese’s first-choice goalkeeper.
After returning to action, the 26-year-old delivered a series of standout performances in Serie A, particularly in high-profile matches against top sides such as Juventus and AC Milan. His shot-stopping ability, composure under pressure, and improved command of his defence helped Udinese secure crucial results during the season.
Across the league campaign, Okoye kept 10 clean sheets in 29 appearances, a record that highlights both his consistency and importance to the team’s defensive stability. His performances grew stronger as the season progressed, with his form in the closing stages earning him further recognition beyond the club.
In addition to being named Udinese Player of the Season, Okoye has also been shortlisted for the Serie A Player of the Month award for May, underlining his strong finish to the campaign and growing reputation in Italian football.
The award represents a significant milestone in his career, reflecting both his resilience and development as a goalkeeper competing at a high level in one of Europe’s most tactical leagues. Despite early setbacks, Okoye’s ability to recover and perform consistently has strengthened his standing at Udinese and enhanced his profile internationally.
With this recognition, Okoye ends the season on a high note and is expected to remain an important part of Udinese’s plans going forward, while also continuing to play a key role for the Super Eagles.
