Niger Tornadoes are set to return to a revitalised home ground for the 2026-27 Nigeria Premier Football League season after the Niger State Government commenced the reconstruction of the Bako Kontagora Stadium.
The renovation project represents a significant boost for the Minna-based club, which was forced to play part of its home fixtures at a neutral venue during the 2025-26 campaign because of the condition of its stadium. Returning to familiar surroundings is expected to provide both a competitive advantage and a renewed sense of identity as the club prepares for a new season.
Speaking on the project, the Niger State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development and Supervising Commissioner for Sports, Jacob Baba Yisa, assured supporters that work would be completed before the start of the 2026-27 NPFL campaign.
According to Yisa, the reconstruction will go beyond general structural improvements. The project will also include the installation of facilities capable of hosting night matches, bringing the stadium in line with modern league requirements and enhancing the overall matchday experience for players, officials and supporters.
The upgrade reflects the state’s commitment to improving sports infrastructure and providing Niger Tornadoes with a venue that meets the demands of top-flight football. Modern floodlighting is expected to increase scheduling flexibility for the league while creating opportunities for more high-profile fixtures to be staged in Minna.
The timing of the renovation is particularly important for Niger Tornadoes, who are eager to build on last season’s campaign without the disruption of playing away from home. Clubs across the NPFL have increasingly recognised the importance of a strong home atmosphere, and the return to the Bako Kontagora Stadium is expected to provide a welcome lift as preparations intensify for the new season.
