Nigeria’s qualification hopes remain firmly in their own hands despite the complicated permutations in Group C. Contrary to what many fans may think, a Zambia victory over Malawi will not eliminate the Super Falcons, provided Nigeria defeat Egypt in their final group match.
If Nigeria overcome Egypt, they will finish on six points. Should Zambia also defeat Malawi, all three teams, Nigeria, Malawi and Zambia, would end the group stage level on six points.
Under CAF regulations, a three-way tie is not decided by the overall group standings. Instead, the results involving the fourth team, Egypt, are discarded and only the matches played among the three tied teams are considered. This creates a separate “mini-league” to determine the final positions.
For Nigeria, those mini-league results are already complete because the Super Falcons have played both Malawi and Zambia. They lost 3-2 to Malawi before defeating Zambia 1-0, leaving them with:
• 3 points
• 0 goal difference
• 3 goals scored
The final mini-league standings will then depend solely on the result between Zambia and Malawi.
Scenario 1: Zambia win by one goal
If Zambia record a narrow victory, such as 1-0 or 2-1, all three teams will finish with:
• 3 points each
• 0 goal difference each
The next tiebreaker is goals scored in the mini-league. Nigeria have already scored three goals, giving the Super Falcons a decisive advantage that would see them progress to the quarter-finals.
Scenario 2: Zambia win by two or more goals
If Zambia win by at least two goals, they will finish top of the mini-league with a positive goal difference. Nigeria would remain on a goal difference of zero, enough to claim second place, while Malawi would fall into negative territory and be eliminated.
The analysis leads to one clear conclusion. If Nigeria defeat Egypt, neither Malawi nor Zambia can push the Super Falcons out of the top two positions in a three-way tie. Their qualification will be mathematically secured regardless of the outcome between Zambia and Malawi.
In simple terms, the Super Falcons do not need to worry about what happens in the other Group C fixture. Their destiny rests entirely in their own hands. Beat Egypt, and Nigeria are through to the WAFCON 2026 quarter-finals.
The message is straightforward: only the Super Falcons can deny themselves a place in the last eight.
