“Arsenal Snatch Dramatic Late Win Over Newcastle in Premier League Thriller”
By Olukayode Olumuyiwa.
Newcastle welcomed Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal to St. James’ Park on Sunday, September 28, in a Premier League contest. The match saw both sides renew their recent tussle, with Newcastle having won four of their last five home games against Arsenal since 2022. Arsenal asserted their dominance early on with a couple of missed chances. The Gunners should have been ahead when Nick Pope brought down Viktor Gyokeres in the box in the 18th minute, but VAR later rescinded the decision, leaving Arsenal players furious.
Newcastle battled back into the game, striking first when their new German striker, Nick Woltemade, headed home a perfect cross from Sandro Tonali. Arsenal tried to get back into the game but was frustrated by the home side’s defense. With an array of stars available, Mikel Arteta made crucial changes in the 70th minute, bringing on Gabriel Martinelli for Bukayo Saka and Mikel Merino for Calafiori. The latter went on to score the equalizer for the Gunners, heading home a Declan Rice cross in the 84th minute.
Arsenal wouldn’t settle for a draw. Substitute Martin Ødegaard’s perfect corner kick in the 96th minute of extra time found Gabriel’s head, and the Brazilian nodded home to secure all three points for Arsenal.
The win reduced the margin at the top, bringing Arsenal to 13 points, second only to Liverpool, who lost to Crystal Palace earlier in the match week.
Mikel Arteta will be delighted to return to the Emirates with three points, considering the team’s fortunes at St. James’ Park in recent times.
