Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has spoken frankly about the physical challenges he battled ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
The Super Eagles shot-stopper revealed that injuries nearly ruled him out of the tournament, confirming earlier comments made by his Chippa United coach, Vusumuzi Vilakazi. The South African tactician had disclosed that Nwabali required surgery to address lingering fitness issues.
At the time, Vilakazi raised serious concerns about the 29-year-old’s availability for AFCON, noting that he was still nursing ankle and hand problems.
Speaking after Nigeria’s 3-2 victory over Tunisia on Saturday, Nwabali admitted the road back to fitness had been difficult.
“I was injured, but with the support of the doctors and physiotherapists, I’ve been able to return and play,” he said.
“It hasn’t been easy for me because these are not things you always talk about publicly. But most of what people hear is true. I try to stay strong and give my best whenever I represent my country.”
Despite the setbacks, Nwabali has remained a key figure for Nigeria at the tournament, showing resilience between the posts as the Super Eagles push forward in Morocco.
