Sunshine Queens have officially relieved head coach Kayode Olujohungbe of his duties following a series of inconsistent results in the ongoing Nigeria Women Football League season.
The decision was confirmed in a statement issued by the club’s management on Friday, where it explained that the move came after a detailed review of the team’s performances. The club noted that a change in leadership had become necessary in order to stabilise results and steer the team back on a more competitive path.
Sunshine Queens acknowledged Olujohungbe’s efforts during his time in charge, thanking him for his professionalism and contributions to the team, while also wishing him success in his future career.
During his tenure, the coach oversaw 13 matches, recording two wins, six draws, and five defeats. While the team showed flashes of promise, the inability to convert draws into victories and maintain consistency ultimately impacted their position on the table.
The Akure-based side currently sit ninth in Group B with 12 points, a standing that has raised concerns within the club’s hierarchy, especially with expectations of a stronger showing this season.
The management believes that a fresh approach on the technical bench could help reinvigorate the squad as they approach the decisive phase of the campaign.
The development adds to a growing trend of managerial changes in the NWFL as clubs intensify efforts to improve results and secure favourable positions before the end of the regular season.
Sunshine Queens are now expected to announce an interim or permanent replacement in the coming days, with the immediate focus on turning around their fortunes and climbing up the standings.
With several matches still to be played, the club will be hoping that the change can spark a positive reaction from the players and provide the momentum needed to finish the season on a stronger note.
