Nigeria’s Falconets produced a solid performance to defeat Malawi 2-0 in the first leg of their 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifying tie at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne.
The home side, coached by Moses Aduku, dominated proceedings from the start, controlling possession and creating several chances in the opening half. Despite their superiority, they were unable to find a breakthrough before the interval, with Malawi managing to keep the score level heading into halftime.
The deadlock was finally broken just one minute into the second half, although in fortunate circumstances for the hosts. Malawi defender Kenneth Maureen inadvertently turned the ball into her own net, handing Nigeria a deserved lead after sustained pressure.
Buoyed by the opening goal, the Falconets increased their tempo and continued to push forward in search of more goals. Their efforts paid off before the hour mark when Ifeanyi Kindness found the back of the net to double Nigeria’s advantage and put them firmly in control of the tie.
The two-goal cushion gives the Falconets a significant advantage heading into the second leg, which is scheduled to take place at the Bingu National Stadium on Saturday, May 9.
With qualification for the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup on the line, Nigeria will be aiming to protect their lead and finish the job away from home. Meanwhile, Malawi face an uphill task as they seek to overturn the deficit and keep their hopes of reaching the tournament alive.
The winner over the two legs will secure a place at the global competition, making the return fixture a decisive encounter for both sides.
