Nigeria’s Super Falcons wrapped up their preparations for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in style with a commanding 3-1 win over long-time rivals Ghana on Sunday evening.
The nine-time African champions dominated from start to finish with former Liverpool and Arsenal star Asisat Oshoala, Africa’s trailblazer in the English Women’s Super League, getting on the scoresheet in her return to the national team.
Chiwendu Ihezuo opened the scoring in the 34th minute after capitalizing on a mix-up in the Ghanaian defense. Oshoala followed up with a composed penalty conversion ten minutes later, doubling Nigeria’s lead before halftime.
Skipper Rasheedat Ajibade sealed the victory five minutes into the second half, finishing off a smooth team move to make it 3-0.
Ghana, unable to cope with Nigeria’s pace and aggression, found little joy in attack. They did, however, manage a consolation goal in the 88th minute through Alice Kusi.
The result will come as a major confidence boost for head coach Justin Madugu as the Falcons look to clinch an unprecedented tenth WAFCON title when the tournament kicks off in Morocco.
