Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, has pledged full support for the upcoming World Soccer Legends’ Anti-Cancer Charity Match, a global initiative aimed at raising awareness and funds in the fight against cancer.
During a courtesy visit to the NSC Headquarters, members of the Main Organising Committee (MOC), led by National Coordinator Jacob Onu and HRH Alhassan Yakmut – former NSC Director-General and now Special Adviser to the Committee- presented their program schedule and outlined their goals to the Chairman.
The charity match, set to coincide with the United Nations World Cancer Day on October 4, will feature prominent African football legends. The event seeks to use the unifying power of football to shine a spotlight on the growing cancer crisis across Africa and mobilize support for victims and research efforts.
Mallam Dikko expressed enthusiasm about the initiative, describing it as a cause close to his heart. “I’ve actively participated in cancer awareness walks in Abuja for over a decade,” he recalled. “In 2017, I played a major role in bringing ex-Super Eagles stars like Kanu Nwankwo, Peter Rufai, Mutiu Adepoju, and Tijani Babangida for the Medicaid charity match. We raised significant awareness through that event, and I even played myself.”
He assured the organizers of the Commission’s commitment to the campaign. “This is a collective fight- cancer doesn’t spare anyone. The Ministry of Health alone cannot carry this burden. We at the NSC are ready to collaborate and contribute towards the success of this noble cause.”
Mr. Onu, in his address, emphasized the significance of the event. “We’re using this platform not only to raise awareness but also to generate funding through partnerships with the private sector. Our work plan has already been submitted to the Health Ministry, and we’re here to align with the NSC as well.”
Also present was Mr. Adeyinka Adeboye, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Grassroots Sports Development, who praised the initiative and expressed confidence that the NSC’s involvement would drive momentum and ensure wider impact.
