Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has stated that Rodri will be free to leave the club if he is no longer happy at the Etihad Stadium.
The Spanish midfielder had recently sparked speculation about his future after admitting during the March international break that he would be open to playing for Real Madrid at some point in his career.
Responding to the comments, Guardiola made it clear that Manchester City would not stand in the way of any player seeking a move away, emphasizing the importance of player satisfaction within the squad.
“If one player is not happy, they have to leave, continue the same,” Guardiola said.
“Always I think he’s happy and hopefully he can be happy.
“But if he’s not happy, just knock on the door of the sporting director, accept an offer, according to his incredible, incredible quality, and after that it all belongs to the club and himself.”
Rodri has been a central figure in Guardiola’s team in recent seasons, playing a crucial role in the club’s domestic and European successes with his consistency, composure, and tactical intelligence in midfield.
Despite Guardiola’s comments, the manager’s remarks appear to reflect a broader philosophy rather than an immediate indication that the midfielder is set to depart. The City boss has consistently maintained that players should remain committed and motivated, while also respecting their personal ambitions.
With interest from top clubs like Real Madrid and Rodri’s importance to Manchester City’s system, any potential move would likely attract significant attention in the transfer market.
For now, the situation remains one to watch as City continue their campaign, with Guardiola keen to keep his squad focused while leaving the door open for players to decide their futures.
