Chelsea defender Levi Colwill is facing a prolonged spell on the sidelines after sustaining a serious knee injury during a routine training session at the club’s Cobham headquarters. The 22-year-old centre-back has undergone surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament, an injury that is expected to keep him out for several months and likely rules him out for most of the 2025–26 season.
Colwill had only just returned to the squad for pre-season preparations when the unfortunate incident occurred. According to the club, the injury was picked up earlier this week while the players were going through fitness drills under new head coach Enzo Maresca, who took over the reins following Mauricio Pochettino’s departure. The timing of the injury is a major setback for the young Englishman, who was tipped to play a key role in Maresca’s backline this season.
In a statement released by the club, Chelsea confirmed the surgery had gone successfully, and the player is now beginning his recovery under the supervision of the club’s medical department. “Levi Colwill has today undergone successful surgery after sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament injury during training earlier this week. The 22-year-old will now begin his rehabilitation process and will be supported throughout by our medical staff at Cobham,” the club noted.
This development opens the door for summer signing Jorrel Hato to make an early impact. The highly-rated Dutch defender was brought in from Ajax during the current transfer window and could now find himself thrust into the starting lineup far earlier than anticipated. With Colwill sidelined and veteran Thiago Silva no longer at the club, Chelsea’s defensive options have been reduced, forcing Maresca to explore alternatives as the season kicks off.
Chelsea are set to begin their Premier League campaign with a home fixture against Crystal Palace on August 17. The absence of Colwill will undoubtedly force a tactical rethink for Maresca, who had reportedly been planning to build his defensive system around the England international. The coach may now turn to academy graduate Alfie Gilchrist or use versatile midfielder Moisés Caicedo in a deeper role to cover the defensive gap in the short term.
Colwill had been enjoying a steady rise in his career over the past two seasons, following a loan spell at Brighton where he impressed with his composure, ball distribution, and reading of the game. His performances earned him a new long-term deal with Chelsea, and he was seen as one of the core players around whom the club’s future would be built.
Fans and teammates have taken to social media to express their support, wishing Colwill a speedy and complete recovery. While the road back from an ACL injury can be long and demanding, the club remains optimistic that with proper care and rehabilitation, Colwill will eventually return stronger.
The injury also comes at a time when Chelsea are aiming to re-establish themselves as serious contenders in both the league and Europe. Maresca’s tactical setup, which relies on a ball-playing defender to initiate attacks from the back, will have to be adjusted in Colwill’s absence.
As the club reshuffles its backline, speculation may grow about whether the Blues will dip into the transfer market again before the window closes. With Colwill out, a short-term defensive reinforcement may be on the cards, especially if Hato is deemed too raw for immediate Premier League action.
Colwill’s recovery is expected to take between six and nine months, meaning he could potentially return towards the end of the season if all goes well. Until then, Chelsea must adapt and push forward without one of their brightest young stars.
