The Opta Supercomputer has further strengthened Arsenal’s position as overwhelming favourites to win the Premier League title following Manchester City’s failure to secure maximum points against Tottenham Hotspur.
Pep Guardiola’s side were held to a 2-2 draw by Spurs on Sunday, a result that dealt a significant blow to City’s title defence and handed Arsenal another major boost in the race for the crown. The draw came just days after the Gunners had delivered a statement performance with a crushing 4-0 victory over Leeds United.
According to the latest projections from the Opta Supercomputer, Arsenal now have a staggering 91.01 per cent probability of being crowned Premier League champions. If achieved, it would mark their first league title since the historic 2003/2004 “Invincibles” season, ending a wait of more than two decades.
Mikel Arteta’s side currently sit six points clear at the top of the table, and their dominant goal difference, combined with consistent performances against both top and bottom-half opposition, has further convinced the data model that they are on course to finish the job.
In contrast, Manchester City’s chances of retaining the title have dropped sharply. The reigning champions are now given just a 5.49 per cent probability of lifting the trophy, reflecting not only the dropped points against Tottenham but also their recent inconsistency compared to Arsenal’s relentless form.
Aston Villa remain outsiders in the title race, but the Supercomputer still assigns them a 3.25 per cent chance of pulling off a remarkable late surge. Villa’s strong home form and tactical discipline have kept them mathematically in contention, even if their margin for error is now extremely slim.
Meanwhile, the projections suggest that the title challenge is effectively over for traditional heavyweights Liverpool and Chelsea. Both clubs have been given just a 0.11 per cent chance of winning the Premier League, underlining how far adrift they have fallen in the championship race this season.
With 13 league fixtures still to be played before the campaign concludes, the Supercomputer acknowledges that football can remain unpredictable. However, the current data strongly points towards Arsenal maintaining their advantage and finally converting their position at the summit into a long-awaited Premier League title.
The focus now shifts to whether City can apply sustained pressure in the run-in or if Arsenal will continue their march towards history as England’s champions.
