Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah has been drafted into the England national team setup following the injury withdrawal of Marc Guehi, who is recovering from a foot problem.
Reports from BBC Sport on Tuesday indicate that the 26-year-old centre-back is expected to join the Three Lions ahead of their final World Cup qualifying fixtures against Albania and Serbia. While the official confirmation from the English FA is still pending, Chalobah’s inclusion appears imminent as England prepare to conclude their campaign, having already booked their place at next summer’s tournament.
Chalobah’s recall represents another significant step in what has been a steady progression for the Chelsea academy graduate. He first broke into the senior national team under current manager Thomas Tuchel in May and made his debut against Senegal, earning praise for his composure and tactical awareness. However, since then, his international opportunities have been limited. Tuchel admitted in September that the defender was “unfortunate” to miss out on the squads for the qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia, as well as the October international break.
The England manager’s trust in Chalobah is rooted in a long-standing relationship that began during their time together at Chelsea. Tuchel handed Chalobah his professional debut for the Blues in 2021, and the player has since established himself as one of the club’s most dependable defenders. Known for his versatility, he can operate comfortably as a centre-half or defensive midfielder, attributes that have kept him in Tuchel’s plans at both club and international level.
So far this season, Chalobah has featured in all but four of Chelsea’s competitive matches, a testament to his consistency and importance to the team. His contributions have helped the club maintain a strong position in the Premier League, where they currently sit third, while also progressing to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals and advancing through the league phase of the Champions League.
The call-up comes at a time when England’s defensive depth has been tested by injuries. Guehi, who has been a regular feature in the national setup, sustained a foot injury during Crystal Palace’s UEFA Conference League victory over AZ Alkmaar last week. The setback ruled him out of the upcoming qualifiers, prompting Tuchel and his staff to turn once again to Chalobah.
England’s squad may see further changes before the matches commence. Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe confirmed that winger Anthony Gordon will withdraw due to a hip injury, while goalkeeper Nick Pope is also set to miss out as he recovers from concussion symptoms.
Despite these disruptions, England approach the final qualifying window with confidence and the luxury of having already secured their ticket to the World Cup. For Chalobah, the upcoming fixtures present another chance to cement his place in the national team setup and strengthen his claim for a spot on the plane to next summer’s tournament.
