The Opta SuperComputer has released its latest projections ahead of the UEFA Champions League quarter-final second-leg fixtures, predicting the four teams most likely to advance to the semi-finals of the competition.
The return legs are scheduled to take place this midweek, with several European giants still in contention but facing varying degrees of difficulty after the first-leg results.
In last week’s opening ties, Arsenal FC recorded a narrow but crucial 1-0 away victory over Sporting CP, putting the Premier League side in a strong position heading into the return leg at the Emirates Stadium.
Elsewhere, Bayern Munich suffered a setback after falling 2-1 at home to Real Madrid, while Paris Saint-Germain took a commanding step forward with a 2-0 win over Liverpool FC. In Spain, Atletico Madrid produced one of the standout results of the round, defeating FC Barcelona 2-0 at the Camp Nou after Barcelona were reduced to 10 men.
Based on these outcomes, Opta’s statistical model has assessed each team’s probability of progressing, with data suggesting that the losing sides from the first leg face a difficult task in turning their ties around. According to the projections, none of those trailing teams have more than a 21.1% chance of qualifying for the semi-finals.
The SuperComputer gives Arsenal FC an 88% chance of reaching the last four, making them one of the strongest favourites heading into the second leg. Their advantage from the first leg, combined with home support, has significantly boosted their likelihood of progression according to the model.
Bayern Munich are also strongly backed despite their first-leg defeat, with an 83.4% probability of overturning the deficit against Real Madrid and advancing to the semi-finals. The German side’s attacking strength at home is seen as a key factor in their chances of recovery.
Paris Saint-Germain have been given an 85.6% chance of qualification following their solid first-leg victory over Liverpool, with the French champions expected to manage the tie from a position of strength when they travel for the return leg.
Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid are rated at 78.9%, as they prepare to defend their 2-0 advantage over Barcelona in what is expected to be a highly intense second-leg encounter.
Overall, the SuperComputer’s projections point toward a likely semi-final lineup featuring Arsenal, Bayern Munich, PSG, and Atletico Madrid, although the model also acknowledges the unpredictability of knockout football, where momentum shifts, early goals, and individual brilliance could still reshape the outcome of the ties.
As the second legs approach, attention will now turn to whether the statistical predictions hold true or whether any of Europe’s biggest clubs can produce dramatic comebacks to overturn the odds and secure a place in the final four.
