Former Christophe Dugarry has launched a strong critique of young Lamine Yamal following FC Barcelona’s elimination from the UEFA Champions League at the hands of Atlético Madrid.
The French World Cup winner, speaking in a recent interview with RMC Sport, questioned both the teenager’s attitude and his performance during the high-stakes European tie, suggesting that the winger’s confidence may be out of balance with his current level of achievement.
Barcelona’s Champions League campaign came to an end in midweek after a disappointing result against Atlético Madrid, a defeat that sparked widespread analysis and criticism across Europe. While Yamal opened the scoring early in the match, the Catalan side were ultimately unable to maintain control and were knocked out of the competition.
Dugarry did not hold back in his assessment, arguing that while the youngster possesses clear talent, he still has a long way to go before being considered among the elite players in world football.
“If you’re going to talk a lot, make sure your team is capable of winning,” Dugarry said.
“He scored in the 4th minute. And then? Dembele would surely have scored a few more goals.”
He further claimed that Barcelona did not do enough collectively to justify progression in the tournament, while also pointing to Yamal’s overall influence on the match as insufficient for a player of his growing reputation.
“He has talent, but he is far from being one of the best in the world,” Dugarry added. “I am not at all convinced that Barcelona deserved to go through against Atlético, given Lamine Yamal’s performance. He has an inflated ego.”
The comments have added to ongoing debates around young Yamal’s rapid rise in European football, where he has been widely praised for his technical ability, confidence, and maturity despite his age.
However, critics like Dugarry argue that expectations must be carefully managed as the winger continues to develop at the top level.
As FC Barcelona reflect on their Champions League exit, attention will now turn to how the squad and its young stars respond in the remainder of the season, both domestically and in future European campaigns.
