Vinícius Júnior has moved ahead of Lionel Messi in a major UEFA Champions League statistical milestone, setting a new record for the most assists in the knockout stages of the competition.
The Real Madrid winger reached the landmark even as his side suffered elimination from the tournament, falling 6-4 on aggregate to Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals.
In the second leg of the tie, Vinícius produced another key contribution by setting up a goal for Kylian Mbappé, helping Real Madrid to one of their three goals on the night. However, despite their attacking efforts, Madrid were beaten 4-3 in the match and ultimately knocked out of the competition.
The assist proved historically significant, as it took Vinícius to 13 assists in Champions League knockout matches, surpassing Messi’s previous record of 12 assists in 77 appearances at that stage of the tournament.
According to statistical reports, the Brazilian has achieved this feat in far fewer matches, having reached the milestone in just 41 knockout appearances. This places him ahead of Messi in efficiency for assists at this stage of Europe’s elite club competition.
However, Vinícius still sits behind Cristiano Ronaldo, who leads the all-time list with 15 assists in 85 knockout-stage matches.
Despite the disappointment of Real Madrid’s exit, the 26-year-old’s individual achievement adds another highlight to his growing Champions League résumé. He has already lifted the trophy twice with Los Blancos and continues to establish himself as one of the competition’s most influential attacking players.
For comparison, Messi won four Champions League titles during his career, while Ronaldo holds five, including four with Real Madrid and one with Manchester United.
With several years still ahead of him at the top level, Vinícius now has the opportunity to further extend his record and potentially close the gap on Ronaldo in the coming seasons as he continues to play a central role for Real Madrid in Europe.
