The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has clarified the reasons behind shifting the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) to a later date.
Originally scheduled to begin on March 17, the tournament will now take place from July 25 to August 16.
Speaking during an appearance on SuperSport’s Soccer Africa, CAF’s acting Secretary-General, Samson Adamu, acknowledged that the decision was difficult but necessary. He explained that certain challenges at the time made it impossible to stage the competition under ideal conditions.
According to Adamu, ensuring a high-quality tournament environment for the participating teams was the top priority. He also noted that, following the successful organization of the men’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), it was important to give the women’s tournament the same level of planning and proper setup.
He emphasized that CAF wants WAFCON to be delivered under the best possible circumstances, allowing players to perform at their highest level.
