Nigeria’s women’s national team, the Nigeria women’s national football team, have been dealt a blow ahead of preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after forward Esther Okoronkwo was ruled out for around six weeks due to injury.
Okoronkwo sustained a meniscus injury on her knee during AFC Toronto’s league match against Halifax earlier this week. The injury has sidelined the 29-year-old attacker, with medical reports indicating she will require a recovery period of approximately six weeks.
Despite the setback, there is optimism that she could still return in time for the tournament, which is scheduled to begin on July 25 in Morocco.
The forward was one of Nigeria’s standout performers in the previous edition of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, playing a crucial role in the Super Falcons’ triumph. She recorded two goals and six assists, making her one of the key contributors to the team’s success and a vital part of their attacking structure.
Her absence, even if temporary, is considered a significant concern for the Super Falcons as they continue preparations for a tournament where they aim to maintain their dominance in African women’s football. The team has relied heavily on experienced attackers like Okoronkwo, and her injury comes at a sensitive time in the buildup.
Nigeria will be looking to manage her recovery carefully in order to ensure she returns fully fit and ready for selection if she recovers in time. Her rehabilitation process will be closely monitored in the coming weeks as the team balances player fitness with long term tournament preparation.
The Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco will bring together the best teams on the continent, and Nigeria, as one of the most successful sides in the competition’s history, will be aiming to defend their reputation and compete strongly for another title.
