Nigeria’s Flamingos delivered a commanding performance on Saturday evening, crushing Guinea 5-0 in the first leg of their 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifying fixture in Abidjan.
The Nigerian girls wasted no time stamping their authority on the encounter, with captain Harmony Chidi opening the scoring just one minute into the game. The early goal immediately unsettled the hosts and set the tone for a one-sided contest dominated by the visitors from start to finish.
Chidi doubled Nigeria’s advantage in the 13th minute after another swift attacking move exposed Guinea’s fragile defence. The Flamingos continued to pile pressure on their opponents with aggressive pressing, quick passing and dangerous runs from midfield.
Akeem Busari’s side showed remarkable composure throughout the first half, controlling possession and creating chances almost at will. Their dominance paid off again in the 37th minute when Oluwakemi Adegbuyi calmly added the third goal after a well-worked team move.
Guinea struggled to cope with Nigeria’s pace and attacking intensity, and the Flamingos took full advantage before halftime. Chidi completed her superb hat-trick five minutes before the break, finishing clinically to put the visitors 4-0 ahead and effectively end the contest before the second half began.
Despite holding a comfortable lead, Nigeria refused to slow down after the restart. The Flamingos continued attacking with confidence and purpose, pinning Guinea deep inside their own half for long periods.
Their fifth goal arrived in the 56th minute through Mary Dunstan, whose composed finish capped another flowing move from the Nigerian side. The goal further highlighted the gulf in quality between both teams as the Flamingos maintained total control.
Defensively, Nigeria were equally impressive, preventing Guinea from creating any meaningful scoring opportunities. The backline remained organized and disciplined throughout the encounter, while the midfield dictated the tempo with confidence.
The emphatic away victory places the Flamingos in a strong position ahead of the return leg scheduled for next Saturday at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne.
With a five-goal advantage and a place in the next round firmly within reach, the Flamingos have once again underlined why they remain one of Africa’s strongest sides in women’s youth football.
