Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen has moved to calm growing speculation over his future after comments made by Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle sparked fresh reports linking him with a summer transfer away from the Turkish champions.
The Super Eagles forward has become one of the most sought-after players in European football following another outstanding season, with several top clubs reportedly monitoring his situation ahead of the transfer window.
Rumours intensified in recent days after Chelle appeared to suggest that Osimhen could be on the verge of completing a move, while explaining the striker’s absence from Nigeria’s upcoming international friendlies against Poland and Portugal this month.
Speaking about the players unavailable for selection, the Malian coach revealed that Osimhen had requested not to be included in the squad as he focuses on matters concerning his future.
“We miss two players because Victor Osimhen may be about to change clubs,” Chelle said.
The comment immediately triggered widespread speculation across social media and international media outlets, with many interpreting it as confirmation that the Nigerian international is close to securing a transfer.
However, Osimhen has now stepped forward to address the situation personally and has urged fans and the public to ignore the growing rumours.
Taking to his Instagram Story on Sunday night, the former Napoli striker revealed that he had spoken directly with Chelle to discuss the comments and clarify the misunderstanding.
According to Osimhen, the Nigeria coach’s words were taken out of context and did not accurately reflect the situation.
“I just got off the phone with Coach Eric Chelle regarding the comments about me in his recent interview,” Osimhen wrote.
“Unfortunately, his words have been taken out of context and blown out of proportion. He has great respect for Galatasaray, follows most of our games, and never intended to create any controversy.”
The 27-year-old stressed that there is no issue between himself and the national team coach and expressed appreciation for the opportunity to continue representing Nigeria on the international stage.
“I appreciate the conversation, the opportunity to always represent my country, and I look forward to continuing to work with him.”
Osimhen also praised Chelle’s leadership and coaching qualities, describing him as someone he respects greatly.
“He is a great coach whom I respect a lot, and I kindly ask everyone to disregard the speculation surrounding this matter.”
The statement is expected to ease tensions among Galatasaray supporters, many of whom had become concerned that the striker could be preparing to leave the club following Chelle’s remarks.
Despite Osimhen’s attempt to cool the rumours, uncertainty surrounding his long-term future remains one of the biggest talking points heading into the summer transfer window.
The Nigerian forward enjoyed another prolific campaign and has continued to attract interest from several elite European clubs looking to strengthen their attacking options.
His performances for both club and country have ensured that his name remains a regular feature in transfer discussions, with reports linking him to moves across Europe’s top leagues.
For now, however, Osimhen’s message is clear: supporters should not read too much into Chelle’s comments, and any conclusions about an imminent transfer are premature.
While speculation regarding his future is unlikely to disappear anytime soon, the Super Eagles star has publicly dismissed the latest wave of rumours and reaffirmed his respect for both his national team coach and Galatasaray.
As the summer window approaches, attention will undoubtedly remain fixed on one of Africa’s most valuable footballers, but Osimhen has made it clear that recent claims suggesting a transfer is already close should be treated with caution.
