Former Arsenal star Paul Merson has expressed disbelief over suggestions that the club could consider selling captain Martin Odegaard, describing the idea as “madness” despite reports linking the Norwegian midfielder with a possible exit.
Odegaard has been one of Arsenal’s most influential players since arriving from Real Madrid and played a key role in the club’s recent success. The midfielder captained the Gunners to the Premier League title last season, becoming the first Arsenal skipper since Patrick Vieira to lift the trophy.
Speaking on The Sports Agents, Merson admitted he had heard discussions about Arsenal potentially considering offers for the 27-year-old but insisted that letting him leave would be a major mistake.
According to the former England international, Odegaard remains one of the most technically gifted midfielders in the Premier League and would have no shortage of suitors if he were made available on the transfer market.
Merson argued that clubs across Europe would be eager to sign the Norway international because of his creativity, vision and ability to control matches from midfield.
He also pointed out that Odegaard’s effectiveness is closely linked to the type of attackers around him. Merson believes playmakers operating in advanced midfield roles thrive when they have quick forwards making runs ahead of them, suggesting Arsenal should focus on improving the attacking options around their captain rather than considering his departure.
Since making his move from Real Madrid permanent in 2021, Odegaard has established himself as one of the cornerstones of Mikel Arteta’s project. His leadership qualities, consistency and attacking contributions have made him a fan favourite at the Emirates Stadium.
The midfielder has contributed crucial goals and assists over the years while serving as the creative heartbeat of Arsenal’s midfield. His performances have also helped transform the club into genuine title contenders and one of the strongest teams in English football.
Although there has been no official indication from Arsenal that they intend to sell their captain, Merson’s comments reflect the surprise many supporters would feel if such a move were ever seriously considered.
With Arsenal expected to strengthen their squad ahead of another demanding season, Odegaard is widely viewed as a player around whom the club should continue building rather than one who should be sacrificed.
For now, the Norwegian remains a central figure in Arsenal’s plans, but Merson’s remarks have added fuel to discussions surrounding the club’s future transfer strategy.
