Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha has revealed the deeply personal reason behind the tears he shed following his side’s memorable goalless draw against Spain at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The veteran shot-stopper produced a remarkable performance to help the tournament debutants earn a historic point against the European champions in their opening Group H encounter. Facing one of the strongest attacking teams in world football, the 40-year-old delivered a series of outstanding saves to frustrate Spain throughout the match and preserve a famous clean sheet.
His heroics ensured Cape Verde began their first-ever World Cup campaign with a result few expected, earning widespread praise from fans and pundits alike.
However, while celebrations erupted among teammates and supporters after the final whistle, Vozinha was visibly emotional as he reflected on the journey that had brought him to football’s biggest stage.
Speaking after the match, the experienced goalkeeper disclosed that thoughts of his late grandparents overwhelmed him during the post-match celebrations. According to Vozinha, they played a major role in raising him and inspiring his football career, making their absence particularly painful on such a significant occasion.
The goalkeeper explained that his grandparents had passed away several years ago and were therefore unable to witness what he described as one of the proudest moments of his life.
He also revealed that his mother could not attend the match due to travel complications, including visa difficulties and financial constraints that prevented arrangements from being completed before the tournament.
“I became emotional because I was raised by my grandparents and they were a huge part of my life,” Vozinha said.
“Unfortunately, they passed away some years ago and could not be here to see this moment. My mother also couldn’t make the trip because of visa issues and the costs involved. We simply couldn’t sort everything out in time.”
The emotional evening was made even more special by the records the goalkeeper achieved against Spain.
Vozinha became the oldest goalkeeper ever to keep a clean sheet on his FIFA World Cup debut after producing seven saves against Luis de la Fuente’s side. His performance also earned him the Man of the Match award, capping a historic night for both the player and his country.
In addition, he set another milestone by becoming the oldest player to feature in a nation’s first-ever World Cup match, surpassing the previous record held by Curaçao goalkeeper Eloy Room.
Despite his impressive career, Vozinha admitted he never imagined he would one day receive such recognition on the global stage.
The Chaves goalkeeper expressed immense pride at being named the standout performer in a match that featured several world-class Spanish stars.
“I never expected something like this to happen,” he said.
“Being named Man of the Match in my first World Cup game is an incredible feeling. It is a huge honour and something I will never forget.”
The goalkeeper also highlighted the significance of the result for Cape Verde, a small island nation that had to overcome numerous challenges to qualify for the tournament.
According to him, securing a draw against a football powerhouse such as Spain was a reward for years of hard work and sacrifice by players, coaches and supporters who believed in the team’s dream.
“I am extremely proud to represent my country,” Vozinha added.
“We come from a small nation and our journey to this World Cup was not easy. Many people worked tirelessly to help us reach this stage. To stand here today and compete against a team like Spain is a dream come true.”
“Our achievement belongs to everyone who played a role in helping Cape Verde qualify. This moment is for the entire country.”
Cape Verde’s historic result has significantly boosted their hopes of progressing from Group H, while Vozinha’s heroic display has already become one of the standout stories of the tournament’s opening week.
The Blue Sharks will now look to build on their impressive start as they continue their maiden World Cup adventure, with their veteran goalkeeper proving that age is no barrier when determination, experience and belief come together on football’s biggest stage.
