Liberian football icon George Weah has weighed in on one of the biggest debates in world football, insisting that France captain Kylian Mbappé remains comfortably ahead of Spain’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal despite the youngster’s rapid rise.
Yamal has enjoyed a remarkable breakthrough over the past year, establishing himself as one of the brightest talents in world football while continuing to impress for both Barcelona and Spain. His performances have inevitably led to comparisons with some of the game’s biggest stars, including Mbappé, who continues to cement his status as one of football’s elite forwards.
Weah, however, believes those comparisons are premature. Speaking during an interview with El Chiringuito TV, the former Ballon d’Or winner praised Yamal’s immense potential but stressed that the Spanish winger is still at the beginning of his journey, whereas Mbappé has already built a career filled with achievements at both club and international level.
“Lamine Yamal is a young player. You don’t want to compare him with Mbappé,” Weah said.
“Mbappé is a phenomenon. Yamal is just growing. I just hope that Yamal continues his career in this fashion. But you don’t compare him with Mbappé. Everybody knows that Mbappé is far away.”
Weah’s comments come as both players continue to make headlines at the ongoing FIFA World Cup. Mbappé has once again demonstrated his quality on the biggest stage, leading France’s attack with six goals and playing a decisive role in their progress through the tournament.
Yamal has also made an impact for Spain, contributing a goal while continuing to showcase the creativity, confidence and technical ability that have made him one of the most exciting young players in world football. Despite his impressive performances, Weah believes the teenager still has significant development ahead before he can be measured against a player of Mbappé’s calibre.
With Mbappé firmly in his prime and Yamal only beginning what promises to be a long career at the highest level, the debate is likely to continue for years. For Weah, however, there is little room for comparison at this stage, with the French superstar still setting the benchmark for the next generation.
