Falconets captain Christianah Uzoma has revealed that determination played a major role in Nigeria’s impressive victory over England in the Round of 16 at the ongoing 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
Moses Aduku’s team secured their place in the quarter-finals after defeating the Young Lionesses 3-0 on Thursday.
Tosin Rafiu, Janet Akekoromowei and Mary Mamudu were all on target as the Falconets produced a convincing performance to eliminate England from the competition.
Uzoma said the Nigerian team is now focused on going all the way to the final, while also setting their sights on winning the tournament.
“We hope to get to the final. Our hope is to win the World Cup,” Uzoma told FIFA.
Reflecting on the victory against England, the Falconets captain said the players were determined from the outset not to suffer defeat or return home at the Round of 16 stage.
“Our performance was good, and we told ourselves that we were not going to lose this game and that we didn’t want to go home. We came with determination,” she added.
Nigeria will now face Colombia in the quarter-finals as they battle for a place in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
The crucial encounter is scheduled to take place in Lodz on Sunday.
